The structural difference between strong and fragile liquids

نویسندگان

چکیده

A structural order parameter for disordered configurations is defined, based, not on local topologies, but the degree of restraint imposed each atom. This provides a clear distinction between strong liquid (SiO2) and fragile (a binary Lennard-Jones mixture) without reference to dynamics. Where exhibits an abrupt transition from unrestrained restrain below melting point, molten silica highly constrained even at equilibrium. We determine temperature dependence average number particles restrained per pinned particle consider feature potential energy landscape responsible determining fragility.

Hybrid glasses from strong and fragile metal-organic framework liquids

Hybrid glasses connect the emerging field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the glass formation, amorphization and melting processes of these chemically versatile systems. Though inorganic zeolites collapse around the glass transition and melt at higher temperatures, the relationship between amorphization and melting has so far not been investigated. Here we show how heating MOFs of zeoli...

Fragile vs strong liquids: a saddles ruled scenario

– In the context of the energy landscape description of supercooled liquids, we propose an explanation for the different behaviour of fragile and strong liquids. Above Goldstein’s temperature Tx, diffusion is interpreted as a motion in the phase space among saddles of the potential energy. Two mechanisms of diffusion then arise: mechanism A takes place when the system overcomes potential energy...

Fragile-to-strong crossover in supercooled liquids remains elusive.

Transport properties of glass forming liquids change markedly around an onset temperature To. For temperatures T above To, these properties depend little with T , while for T < To these properties are super -Arrhenius – varying faster than exponentially in 1/T . Upon lowering temperature significantly further, theory [1] predicts that reversible transport in a supercooled liquid, if it can be o...

Experimental Indication of Structural Heterogeneities in Fragile Hydrogen-bonded Liquids

We present the first experimental characterization in molecular fragile glassformers of a ”prepeak” that appears significantly below the main peak of the static structure factor. The temperature and density dependences of this prepeak are studied via elastic neutron scattering experiments under high pressure (up to 300 MPa) in m-toluidine and m-fluoroaniline. The prepeak intensity increases wit...

Distinct structural and dynamical difference between supercooled and normal liquids of hydrogen molecules.

Supercooled hydrogen liquid as well as superfluid have continued to elude experimental observation due to rapid crystallization. We computationally realized and investigated supercooled hydrogen liquid by a recently developed non-empirical real-time molecular dynamics method, which describes non-spherical hydrogen molecules with the nuclear quantum effects. We demonstrated that the hydrogen sup...
